Here at Kruse (pronounced cruise) Internet Services, I'm in the business of search engine optimisation, e-marketing and internet marketing. For example, suppose through your web site you sell blue widgets and your primary market is the English-speaking market. Suppose your main competitor also sells blue widgets through their web site. A potential client types in "blue widgets" to a search engine and sees your competitor's site on the first page of returned results in Google. They check the goods and find them to their liking. This is a sale for your competitor. Your product is just as good in every way but your potential buyer never gets to know. Why? Because your site came up in the search results on the third, the fourth, the fifth page of returned positions. Or lower. So what you have to do is catch the eye of the searcher. Which you won't do if they can't find your site.
If you're not on that first page of returned results then the money you spend on your web site is, at the very least, of questionable value.
